sports medicine for parents of youth athletes

**************

Hello Youth Sports Fan,

Did you know that as many as 100,000 serious youth athletic injuries occur every year?

And guess what, there is so much you can do as a parent to prevent and protect your child in youth athletics so that they can compete and develop as youth athletes. You want them to participate and enjoy their youth sports activities but you also want them to be safe. Sports medicine will play into your childs' sporting experience, the more you knwo the better they will be for it.

I am a middle aged parent myself of two sports loving children. They both compete in multiple sports and in soccer they are both involved in the highest level of youth competition. I have been to many games and meets over the years and it was out of this experience that I saw the need for an educational guide to help parents deal with youth sports injuries. When I am coaching and I see a child get hurt on the field I want to do the right thing for them so they can get treated, recover and return to play in the best possible way. However I have seen time and again cases where a child gets hurt and the parents don't know what to do or they do the wrong thing.

Just this last soccer season a poor girl on my daughters team had a nasty bruise injury to her leg that was really bothering her. She kept coming to practice and games and suffering through the injury. I asked her one day what she was doing to treat it. She told me she was not really doing anything, her parents were not aware of what to do for it, and thus she was hobbled for weeks. Once we got her some advice she was on the road to healing very soon.

Another incident happened last spring in which a 13 year old boy was tackled from behind in a soccer game and had his leg broken. There was more noise about punishing the act than there was about fixing the injured boy. No one knew how to react to the situation which caused confusion and chaos. Then when the ambulance arrived the parents did not really understand the process of what they need to do. (now I will grant you these type of severe injuries are rare, but if and when they occur the more people who know what to do things will be for the better)

I knew that by talking to these professionals I could gain insight as to how and when sports injuries can be preveted and how they should be treated.
